The Convenient Aquatic Life-Saving Device
April 2023
Modern Life jackets are all heavy, bulky, inconvenient, and expensive, ranging between $20 - $200.
A convenient, cost-effective alternative to modern aquatic life-saving devices.
A small, wearable, inflatable life-saving device.
- Small/compact
- Minimal material for cost efficiency
- Comfortable to wear
- Doesn't restrict movement
- Bright colours to draw attention
Prototype Sketches
I started with a rough sketch (top left) of my initial idea of the "Life-Band".
Next I moved through three more prototypes experimenting and improving the dimensions and function with each iteration. Then I combined the best features from each iteration into the fourth prototype, which I later used to create the final render.
For the colours of the Life Band, I wanted to make sure it was bright and noticeable against the water.
I experimented with many variations but landed on orange, black and blue (middle bottom) combinations. I chose this because the orange is complimentary to the blue of the ocean and therefore would stand out, and because the orange and black combo is widely recognized as an "emergency" colour.
How It Works
In the event of an emergency, The Life-Band will immediately trigger once submerged in water. The compressed air in the cylinder will travel through the plastic pipe to the nylon bladder.
Final Design
A life-saving band that is cost-efficient, convenient, and quickly inflates in an emergency.
The band is made with lightweight, durable materials such as nylon and stainless steel.
